Rev. Peter Barber
Days: Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sun
Hello, my name is Peter Barber, I have been the Minister of Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church for twenty-two years. Over the years we have found God leading us into becoming a family of God in the community. We value all who come to events and organizations in the Church and want them, young and old alike, to experience the amazing love of God for them personally. The journey that we are on together since I became the Minister has been one of moving towards a greater openness to God and to one another. We are developing a deeper love for each other and a higher level of faith in God and a stronger commitment to reach out into the diverse community of Gorgie Dalry that we serve.
I became a Christian when I was sixteen when, during a time of crisis in my life, I heard a message of how God loved me, and had shown this by sending His Son Jesus to rescue us and give us a new beginning in His family. I put my trust in Jesus as my Saviour, forgiving all my failings, and came to know God as my Father, giving me a place in His family, and the Holy Spirit as my Enabler, able to take my brokenness and start to make something beautiful out of it. It is that message of the blessings for everyone of being a part of God’s family that continues to inspire my vision of what the Church should be.
I love the Lord Jesus, I owe to Him my life, and I long that every man woman and child in our community and in the churches which are in our area, would also come to a knowledge of how much He loves every one of us and would discover the hope and future that He has for us all.
CHILDREN & FAMILIES OUTREACH WORKER:
Days: Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri & Sun
Rachel joined our Staff Team in August 2017 as our new, full-time, Children & Families Outreach Worker, an expanded role from the Youth Worker posts we have had in the past. Rachel is a former Primary School Teacher who has long felt the call to Children and Young People’s ministry. Rachel grew up in Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church and is herself a member of our Sunday School and Student Group Alumni. As such, she brings not only the skills and ideas of a Teacher to our Youth Work, but also a deeply rooted heart for and desire to reach out to the children and young people of the Gorgie, Dalry & Stenhouse areas. A large part of her work involves connecting with our local schools and she can often be found helping with breakfast and lunch clubs, as well as running SU groups. Having also worked as a barista while a student, she can sometimes be found helping at our church-café along at Saltyard.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORKER:
Days: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Sun
Michael joined our Staff team in August 2017 as our new Community Outreach Worker. The role of Community Outreach Worker is a new one, and Michael is the first to hold this post in our church. The role is centrally funded by the Church of Scotland and was granted to us as a church to assist with pastoral and outreach duties across our now very large parish. Due to the newness of this post the role of Community Outreach Worker is, inevitably, still taking shape. For now Michael has been busy engaging with the various groups and charities that connect with our church and particularly those that make use of our halls. He is also in the process of expanding our connection with Her Majesty’s Prison Edinburgh, which now falls within our Parish Boundaries, as well as local nursing homes and sheltered accomodation. Michael hailes from Fife but spent the last seventeen years up in Aberdeenshire working as an accountant, taxi driver and, most recently, studying at the Highland Theological College from which he graduated in 2017.
WORSHIP DIRECTOR & COMMUNITY MUSICIAN:
Days: Wed, Sat & Sun
Rachel Walkinshaw came to us as a visitor from America back in late 2015. At that time she lent us her talents as a Singer-Songwriter on a voluntary basis and her contributions inspired us to advertise for a Worship Director & Community Musician when she left to return to the states. Having failed to find anyone to take up the post locally, we got in touch with Rachel to see if she would be interested in taking on the job on a 2 year Temporary Religious Worker Visa. She said yes, choosing to leave behind her life as a gigging Singer-Songwriter in New York. Having Joined our Staff team in early 2017 Rachel has transformed our sung-worship, inviting members of the congregation with hitherto hidden musical talents to join the Praise Band. As our Community Musician Rachel is also responsible for organising other music and arts events in our church and particularly at Saltyard. Keep an eye open for our next musical event.
Days: Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri
Gordon was hired as our Administrative Assistant in November 2015. Since then his role and hours have expanded causing a job-title change to ‘Administrator’. His role is very broad and hard to define, but effectively consists of all task as and concerns around the church that are not the responsibility of the Ministry Team. Gordon can be found at the church office during the week between 9am and 5pm and will also be the one who answers our phone if you call and usually the person to respond to email enquiries also. If you work as a volunteer in our church and find your ministry or activities involve admin. work that you don’t have the time or skills for, do not hesitate to get in touch with Gordon.
